January 2022
New for 2022;
Once again our two handymen, Brian Keeling and Paul Rowlands, have gone above and beyond out of season and created a brand new bar area. The room has had a complete facelift and once again has put Blackwood at the very top of facilities in Monmouthshire.

November 2021
This month Blackwood said farewell to a great character and stalwart of the club, Ken Hinksman.
With his extravagant dance style and his outrageous fancy dress Ken was and will always be an unforgettable member. very supportive both on and off the green Ken became clubman of the year in just his 1st season. A true gentleman who would give you his last he will be very much missed by all here in the club. condolences go to his ever supportive son Justin. |
April 2021
This month Blackwood said a sad farewell to Eric Gwilt.
Eric joined our club in 1991 and became a life member in 2015.
He served on committee from 2009 to 2014 and won our novice competition in 2000.
Although Eric's accolades appear few, this does not detract from the fact that Eric was a very competitive sportsman. He skipped for our GBL team for many years and had a very good skips record. He also played rugby for Blackwood stars and was a handy little outside half.
Eric was a regular tourist until ill health stopped him playing in 2015.
A very popular, quiet man who will be thought of fondly by all Blackwood members with his distinctive squeaky voice telling people to "be up".
Our thoughts are with the family. We thank you for your time with us Eric, RIP.

Blackwood say goodbye to a loyal member
Keith Bather
Blackwood has said a sad fairwell to a great and loyal member of the club.
Keith joined in 1981 and became a life member in 2006. On the green Keith was a regular 1st team bowler and reached club finals in the championship, the Handicap (winning in 2002), the novice, the 2 wood singles, 4 wood pairs, and the two wood pairs (winning 1994). Off the green Keith held captaincy roles and was a committee member on and off between 1989 and 2005. Keith was awarded club man of the year in 2013 for his unwavering support in all that Blackwood do. Keith attended every club function, every club tour and never missed a home match. Keith will be fondly remembered and his line dancing prowess and his speed to the buffet will be sorely missed. Always smiling and supporting Keith leaves behind a son Paul, A daughter Rachel and his lovely wife Krys. Our love and condolences reach out to you all in this difficult time. |
Annual dinner
Below are the special awards for the ladies who, without which, Blackwood Bowls Club would struggle greatly. Always present at matches and special occasions Gaynor, Lesley, Jo and Lynne can always be relied upon for high quality food and bar duties - a big thank you to you ladies.
Oliver wins the MBA U18 final
Oliver's accolades just keep on coming. Last year Oliver won the RSVBA under 25 title but this year he wins possibly a more prestigious Monmouthshire title in the under 18's singles.
Played in RTB Ebbw Vale, Oliver was up against an older competitor from Abertillery. Still only 15 years old Oliver raced into a 7/1 lead. His opponent came back to 7/6 but that was the end of the contest as Oliver maintained the pressure and lifted the trophy with a 21/6 win. |

Oliver Witchell has become Blackwood's Latest Welsh international following in the footsteps of his father David.

During the 2018 season, Allen Witchell was the MBA president and his chosen charity was the welsh air ambulance.
Donations were received during president matches and Tours. Once again the Blackwood members stepped up to the mark and today Allen handed over a cheque for £2430.10.
Our sincere thanks to all who contributed.

2nd January 2019
Blackwood are reeling once again as we heard this morning of the sudden death of one of its greatest stalwarts Paul Morgan.
Paul was not only a very good bowler, a very hard worker but more importantly was one of the nicest men in the club if not the county.
Paul's honors are plenty:
A member since 1981, Paul has achieved much in the game:
Clubman of the year 2004
Chairman 2008 - 2011
Club Captain 2013-2014
Club champion 2010
Paul was RSVBA president in 2010 and the county president in 2007. He was the over 60's singles champion in 2015 and won the RSVBA pairs in 2012.
Words cannot express the loss of this great man for Blackwood but his loss will also be felt around the district and the county as he worked tirelessly as MBA competition sec and was the Hon. secretary of the Rhymney and Sirhowy Valley bowling association.
As I type I still cannot believe Paul wont be in the pavilion anymore, stocking the bar or counting the money. We really have lost a great 1st team player, a great clubman and a genuinely lovely man. Paul always conducted himself with dignity and was a great ambassador for Blackwood and the game of bowls in general.

December 2018
It is with immense sadness that Blackwood announce the loss of another great club member, Charles Winston.
Following a long battle with cancer, Charles finally succumbed on Friday 28th of December. Charles joined our club in 2007 and his proactive attitude soon became evident. By 2010 he was on committee and by 2014 he was the clubs vice chairman. Charles worked tirelessly as captain, vice captain and selector for his beloved GBL team. In latter years Charles was instrumental in improving our club to what it is today. He became bar manager and was always on hand to open up and liaise with the groundsman. On the green Charles had his 1st team games and had his share of tournament wins such as the novice in 2011, and three consecutive pairs wins in 2015, 2016 & 2017. In 2015 he was voted club man of the year by his fellow members an achievement which I know meant a lot to him. Charles was very articulate when making his point and would not be talked over although he was a funny man who would tell a joke and laugh hysterically before reaching the punch line. We all feel the families loss today and he will be fondly remembered, a brave, strong, lovely man. |
2018 Clubman of the year - Colin Eaketts
Blackwood's annual presentation dinner dance was held on Saturday 17th November at the Islwyn Indoor center.
It was a packed house as chairman David Witchell gave his opening address.
Dave thanked everyone for the extra special effort this year in hosting many high profile games in the year of Allen Witchell's presidency. Gordon Cook took the floor as competition sec. and the awards began which were presented by our patron Norman Simkin.
There were special awards presented to members of the ladies section who went that extra mile this year with the constant catering duties.
Colin Eaketts was awarded the high accolade of Clubman of the year in a season where there must have been many close contenders.
Allen also then presented the new Player of the year trophy to Mel Tudball.

Under 25 R.S.V.B.A. Champion
Oliver bounced back from a defeat in the Monmouthshire Under 18's final to get a great win the the RSVBA Under 25's final against the much more experienced opponent Matthew Wilde. Matthew the current champion reached another final and is a county and Welsh prospect so Oliver (14) needed to put the MBA disappointment behind him. It was a predictably close match with Oliver eventually running out champion by 21 shots to 17. |

Division 2 Champions 2018
July 2018
It is with immense sadness that Blackwood announce the sad passing of one of our most loyal members Gwyn Berkley.
Gwyn joined Blackwood in 1995 and quickly became a popular member with his "can do" attitude. Indeed he was on the club committee from 2008 to 2018, he was GBL captain or vice captain from 2008 to 2017 and was voted club man of the year by the members in 2007.
As well as positions of office, he also did no end of unseen work such as painting and decorating for the club house, benches and handrails. To this end we thank Gwyn for the way our new club house looks today.
On the green Gwyns accolades were few but he reached the championship final in 2002 and won the novice in 2007 and the two wood pairs in 1996 & 2014. He was always loyal to his beloved GBL side but played 1st team bowls for much of 2017.
Words cannot express our hurt having lost Gwyn and we share our grief with the family, but we are all richer for having had Gwyn in our lives.

Monmouthsire President 2018
2018 is going to be a busy year for Blackwood as we have the the honour of having a club member, Allen Witchell, as county president.
There are six extra fixtures being played on our green with a potential of hundreds of visiting members from around the county visiting our facility. Allen Himself was instrumental in building Blackwood's club house up to what it is today, a facility to be proud of and well capable of hosting such prestigious events. We welcome all visitors and hope you have an enjoyable day at Blackwood Bowls Club. Allen's chosen charity is the Welsh Air Ambulance |

R.S.V.B.A:
Paul Morgan took on the much fancied Mal Evans who started favorite as it was Mal's home Green. However with conditions deteriorating it was Paul Morgan who mastered the conditions and won through.
The Rinks saw Blackwood pitted against a New Tredegar rink filled with both youth and experience. however, they never really challenged the Blackwood rink of Dave, Clive, Gordon & Oliver who ran out convincing winners.
Oliver Witchel reached the Under 25 final, a great achievement at just 13 years of age. He lost out to the experienced Matthew Wild who was playing on his home green.
Oliver also got selected for the welsh youth academy and is pictured top right.

Blackwood's Oliver Witchell was selected to play for monmouthshire in the 3 wood pairs which was played at the national facility at Llandrindod Wells. With Partner "JJ" from Abertillery, they won their 1st game against mid wales and then followed that up with a win over Pembrokeshire. Another great Honour has once again been bestowed on Blackwood as Oliver Witchell at the tender age of just 12 has gained an indoor welsh title. Oliver played 3rd in the final of the welsh under 16's rinks. A fabulous achievement Oliver well done - big things are yet to come we predict.
Added to his honors, Oliver has been selected for the under 25 super 10 and will play in the rinks for monmouthshire and then has been invited to join the welsh u25 academy.

November 2016:
In honour of Norman Simkin The annual presentation night included an extra special award this year. Norman Simkin celebrated 60 years as a member of Blackwood Bowls Club. A well liked and respected man not just at Blackwood but throughout the county. Norman has held many positions at club, district and county level and still hold a place on Blackwood's committee. Norman was been made club patron some years ago and was awarded a commemorative plate this year as an appreciation of his 60 years. |
Finals Day 2016
Finals day was a somewhat depleted affair with Paul Morgan unable to make the day due to ill health. Paul had made 3 finals: 3 set singles, The handicap and the two wood singles.
The 4 finals that were played were a great success with some very close matches.
The Jack Morris Trophy kicked off at 1:30 and it was a fantastic game with young oliver witchell's rink losing eventually by just two shots but terry had to pull off a great last bowl to avoid the extra end.
The Championship was a one sided affair with Clive running out an emphatic winner.
3:30 and the Novice final was again hotly contested going to 19 shots all before Chris Dunstone took a wood out to pick up the 2 he needed.
The two wood pairs was again a match which went to the 21st end. Clive and Paul raced off to a 9-2 lead but charles and David clawed back magnificently to pinch the title.

August 2016:
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Williams.
Ray was an active member of the club for 18 years until ill health meant he could no longer participate. During his time with Blackwood Ray held many positions including GBL Vice Captain, Competition secretary, he was a committee member and an auditor. Ray was awarded the "Clubman of the year" in 2006 for outstanding work for the club which involved the installation of the green's sprinkler system.
Ray was a very influential man who could call on contacts and pull in favours. A quiet but well spoken man who commanded respect when speaking.
We have fond memories of Ray and our thoughts and best wishes are now with the family.
The funeral is to be held on Tuesday 30th August at St. Thomas' Church Cefn Fforest at 11am.
There will then be a cremation over at Croesyceliog and the wake will be at Bryn Meadows Golf Club.dit.

Queen's 90th Celebration.
It was a great evening for the club as over 60 people turned out to celebrate Her majesty's 90th Birthday. Music fun and laughter as we sat out the night. Thank you to all who turned out and also to all who contributed to the evening.
R.S.V.B.A Finals day
6/9/15:
Sporting the new Blue "away" strip, Blackwood had 2 representatives in the district finals. Paul Morgan was in the over 60's final against Mal Evans of Rhymney gwent. Paul never got to terms with the tricky bedwellty park rink whereas mal Evans did. No complaints from paul as he was defeated 21 - 5. A good season for Paul none the less.
The Rinks team of Gordon, Terry, Clive and Dave looked to be unlucky also as they trailed 13 - 5 after just 8 ends.
However we all switched hands to the swinger and brought the mat up to win 7 consecutive ends and take the lead 15 - 13.
Going into the last end 2 up we found ourselves 3 down with just Dai's two bowls left. Dai showed his class to draw the jack but Peter cosh still had two bowls to take it off. Pete missed with his 1st and then could only manage a wick into the head with his 2nd to get a shot giving Blackwood an 18 - 17 win.

Finals Day
30/08/2015:
Finals day was another big success with all players providing great entertainment and a high standard of bowls.
Two wood pairs:
This match saw Julian Young in his 1st final in his 1st season. Playing With David Witchell they were always behind against eventual winners Mel Tudball and Charles Winston.
3 set singles.
Paul Morgan and Mike davies made this final, a pair well accustomed to finals and two very good singles players. It was Paul who eventually won through 2-1.
Championship:
Two worthy finalists at the top of their game David Witchell and Paul Morgan. Dave looked home and dry as he took a 17-3 lead with emaculate draw bowling which Paul had no answer to. However, Paul is an experienced campaigner and legnthened the jack and kept his nerve to claw back to 17 - 17.
Dave then clicked back into gear with some high quality pressure bowls to win 21 - 17 in a final worthy of Blackwoods championship and makes him a record 7 times winner of this competition. A class act..
Handicap:
Once again two seasoned finalists with club captain Colin Eaketts taking on Mike Davies in his second final of the day. A close game and an excellent win for Mike Davies.
2 wood Singles:
Another impressive season for GBL captain Paul Bather saw him reach yet another final. Paul Morgan However, was now in his 3rd final and showed no signs of tiring as he won his 2nd final.
Novice:
This was probably the final which entertained us the most. Kevin Meek and Julian Young fighting this one out as the heavens opened. Kevin took an early lead but as the weather worsened Julian came back into the game. The green was now only just playable and some committee members intervened to suggest a change of rink or an hours break. Julian had fallen twice and kevin once so it was to their credit that they decided to play on. Indeed the standard of bowls did not suffer as both players turned on the style. It went 20 - 20 and came down to the last wood of the game with kevin trailing the jack only to see it lock onto one of Julians bowls. Great game, great day and well done to all competitors.

Blackwood won the Islwyn Cup with an emphatic victory over Pontymister Athletic on their own green. It was a ludicrous situation where the final was played on a Non-Neutral green.
However, with a 3 up 1 down score Blackwood romped home by almost 20 shots.
Blackwood now go into the Caerphilly bowl to play the winners of the RVBA league.

July 2015 - Over 60's Rink win county final
25/08/15 - Blackwood have now gone one step further and won the county final which now puts them in the national finals at Llandrindod Wells on 18th August.
Playing a Llanhilleth rink, it went down to the last end with Blackwood needed two shots to win. Gordon opened up with a good start and paul added the 2nd. The umpire was called to measure and judged Pauls wood to be 2nd shot and so Blackwood were crowned county champions. They must now do it all again in the nationals.
A great honour for the club, well done lads.

20/12/14
This month Blackwood mourns the passing of 2 of its members.
Jack Perry had been a member for 21 years when an operation went wrong and rendered him immobile. A real down to earth likeable character with a no nonsense attitude. Jack was an ex-fireman and was a mans man.
During his time with Blackwood he served on committee and was a club captain.
He won the club handicap in 1990 and the 4 wood pair in 2003.
Jack Perry was a big loss to Blackwood and now that he has passed away, our thoughts and condolences go to the family.
The second member, suddenly following an illness, was Jack Gardiner. Jack has the longest roll of honours of anyone in the club. He joined the club in 1972 and became a life member in 1998 and held many club offices.
His roll of honours is impressive including 4 championship wins and was the county over 60's champion in 1992. He gained high ranking office positions at RSVBA level, MBA level and WBA level. He is known not just throughout the county, but well respected throughout the bowling fraternity in wales in general.
He moved away from club level bowls some years ago concentrating on the county and welsh setup. However, he will always be asscociated with Blackwood Bowls Club and will be remembered by all as someone who lived and breathed bowls. Jack would talk bowls all day and could always be seen at the side of the green talking with old friends from visiting clubs going over matches from years ago.
Our sympathy and condolences are sent out to the family on this sad passing.

RSVBA presentation night
It was the final act of David's presidency to award the tropheys to the winners and runners up at the annual dinner at the Islwyn Indoor Centre. A well turned out function with a good artist, everyone had a great time. Blackwood took the league title and paul Morgan was proud to receive the trophy. Blackwood also smashed them in the raffle!
Well done to david on a successful year.
Club Finals day
A well organised day thanks to the multi-talented Gordon Cook, with a little help from Dave Witchell.
The sun shone and the spectators were treated to some excellent bowling as they sipped on their cold beer.
The 1st two finals got under way with Clive Jenkins and Brian Walters meeting for the 1st time in the championship final. A one sided affair with Brian never really finding the form which got him to the final.
The novice final was a close match which lasted over two hours and came down to the wire with Paul Bather scraping home against John Prestidge. Paul has waited 21 years for this win and it came with great acclaim from the crowd.
Next came the 3 sets final which was contested by Mike (the bike) Davies and Mel Tudball. Mike won 2 - 0 in two close sets.
The two wood pairs was an eagerly awaited contest with two well matched teams. Clive jenkins and Gwyn berkley were the winners by 8 shots over Colin Eaketts and Paul Morgan.
The two wood singles was again a worthy final. Clive Jenkins took an early lead, Gordon Cook brought the mat up and fought his way back into the match. It went all the way with Clive the eventual winner 21 - 20.
The two wood singles was another hard fought battle on a green which was damp and uncut. Gordon Cook looked a little out of sorts as Clive Jenkins raced into an early advantage. Gordon then found it and pegged things back. Terry marking had to use the rear of the card as the ends racked up. At 20 - 20 they shook hands. Gordon threw a 3/4 jack and went a yard through, Clive drew to within 2 foot, Gordon went tight with his last wood and Clive took the game 21-20.
The final of the Handicap was a repeat of the championship final as Clive and brian once again competed for the spoils. Brian had dusted himself down and brought his "A" game to the green this time . It was nip and tuck all the way but Clive prevailed once more in a great final which lasted over 2 hours.
Annual Tour : Ilfracombe

Monmouthshire Presidents
Another great occasion at Blackwood with 6 Monmouthshire rinks visiting our green. County President Paul Watkins was pleased and proud to be this years president and celebrate our 110 years with us.
The sun shone and the bowls was competitive with Monmouthshire chasing the top rink prize. That honour went to a rink where two Blackwood bowlers had to drop in to help out!
Many thanks must go to the 110 yr celebrations committee for the organisation and in particular our hard working captain Paul Morgan.
There's more to come lads, this is just the start!

Caerphilly Crystal Bowl Final
Having won the Caerphilly cup last season, Blackwood now play the league winners of the RVBA in a one match play off for the Crystal bowl. Match to be held at Newbridge on 27th April 2:30pm.
RSVBA President 2014 - David Witchell
It is with great pride that the 2014 president has once again been elected and is from Blackwood Bowls Club.
In an already packed list of honours, Dave now adds the district presidency and joins a long and distinguished list of past Presidents from Blackwood.
It is a challenging time for district bowls with interest waning in the county and inter-district relations becoming strained. It is going to take a strong personality with plenty of energy to galvanise the district, something Dave has in abundance.
Good luck and congratulations to Dave on behalf of Blackwood bowls club.
Annual Presentation Night
The annual presentation night was again well supported and well organised. Competition sec. Gordon cook and club chairman David Witchell ran the evening to time and Patron Norman Simkin presented the prizes.
All life members were belatedly awarded certificates for 25 yr playing service.
2013 Clubman of the year was awarded to Keith Bather for his constant support for all games home and away and supplying the buffet for all home games.

Annual General Meeting
There was a poor attendance this year with members choosing to attend alternative functions.
A minutes silence was observed for Don Jones and Maurice Phillips following an epitaph by chairman Dave Witchell.
Lengthy minutes were read and there were no matters arising.
Some key decisions made on the night:
Officers were re-elected with the following exceptions:
Charles Winston became Vice Chairman
Paul Bather became GBL/RVBA captain
Alvin Royal became GBL/RVBA vice captain
Gordon Cook became MBA/RSVBA vice captain
Finally came the closing speech by the chairman where he thanked everyone for their efforts in another successful year and detailed some key figures. He finished by emphasising the need to increase our membership for next year and wished everyone a safe winter.
Then it was into the lounge where the real discussions were had !

Don Jones
It was with great sadness that we heard this week of the passing of one of Blackwood's biggest characters Don Jones. Don joined the club in 1986 and gained life membership in 2010.
A good clubman Don was a committee member on and off from 1989 to 2006, was both Saturday and mid week captain and was awarded clubman of the year in 1995.
Don was a keen tourist and our memories are of him wearing a blond wig and false breasts singing "islands in the stream" with Alan Witchell.
When his bowls finished Don was keen to run the bar, which he did so with his inimitable no nonsense abrupt style.
Ill health dogged Don for some years but our memories of him are fond and with great affection. Thank you for the memories Don and our thoughts and condolences are now with the family.
The funeral will be held at St. Margret's church Blackwood, Thursday 12th September at 12 noon then the internment at Bedwellty cemetery. Bowlers please wear club uniform.

Club tour to the Isle of Wight
Blackwood made it back with all members in one piece from another successful tour. With two wins out of two and lots of laughs, it goes down as another memorable tour. Venue and service was 1st class and we were able to make our own entertainment in the evening once the professional artist had finished.
Again we thank the organisers, Alan and Norman, for making it all possible.

Islwyn Cup Final
WIN ! Blackwood have won the islwyn cup with a 14 shot win against Abercarn at Ynysddu. It was 3 rinks up and one rink down but it was close with just the final few ends to go Blackwood rallied and picked up 14 shots in two ends. Well done to all who have contributed in the earlier rounds not just those who played in the final. A good club effort sets us up for tour.
Jack Morris Trophy
The Jack Morris trophy will be held on Sunday 14th July and will be in conjunction with the Ladies charity function in aid of cancer research. All participants must wear something pink.
New Member - John Prestige
Blackwood welcomes another new member to the club. John Prestige has joined us having formerly played for Bargoed bowls blub.
Maurice Phillips
This weekend the club were saddened to hear of the passing of Maurice Phillips.
A member since 1970, Maurice will be remembered as a prolific bowler who gained the highest honours at club, association and county level and many say even international level was not beyond him.
He reached the club championship final on no fewer than 9 times and won it on 6 occasions.
Maurice is pictured here having won the county champion of champions trophy in 1985.
A gentleman on and off the green Maurice was not a shouter or a critic but prefered to put players at ease with simple encouragement taking the pressure off with saying's like "just get me 2nd, that will do".
Although he has had some time out of the game recently, he has and always will be fondly thought of and our condolences and kind thoughts are now with the family.
The service is to be held at Croesyceliog cremetorium on Tuesday 11th June at 12 noon then a meet back at the Islwyn indoor bowls stadium for refreshments.
Club blazer and tie has been requested by the family for members wishing to attend.

Clubman of the year went to Gordon Cook. For his running of the bonus ball bringing over £400 a year into the club would have been reason enough but Gordon also runs the club competitions and this year took control of a social night on tour which made it a tour to remember.
Always with a smile, Gordon is one of the clubs characters - A well deserved honour for gordon.
